Day 83, Jun 30, 2011

Halo-halo anyone?

It's one of the more famous summer treats here in the Philippines, and it's called halo-halo (roughly translated to 'all mixed up') which is basically a collection of sweetened preserves, placed in a glass - topped with crushed ice and then, milk is placed in said glass.

Others might even add sugar, but to me, these sweetened items are enough to give the halo-halo the needed sweetness for me. Some would even garnish the dessert with ube (taro flavored thick paste) or leche flan (vanilla pudding with caramel syrup), or both - plus a scoop of ice cream.

The typical halo-halo, if trivia can be believed, started with the Americans way before the 2nd World war here in Manila as a makeshift cooler/dessert. Me, I'm just glad we have such - though due to it's sweetness, I rarely indulge myself... but there will hardly pass a Summer where I won't have tried this at least once.l
